Western Australian State General Election

The Western Australian State General Election will be held on 11 March 2017. If you are overseas and would like to vote, you can do so by postal vote or in-person at some locations. Early voting will only be held at the Australian Consulate in Vancouver from 20th February to 10th March 2017 during normal business hours, with the exception of Friday 10 March, when they will remain open until 6pm local time. Click here to find out opening hours for the Australian Consulate in Vancouver.

To be eligible to vote you must be on the State electoral roll. The last date for enrollment is 9 February. To check whether you are enrolled to vote visit the online enrolment tool at

Postal Voting

You can apply for a postal vote until 6pm Wednesday 8 March.  Please note that postal vote applications for overseas electors should be submitted early to ensure ballot papers are received on time. 

To be included in the count of votes, completed ballot papers must be postmarked on or before 6pm local time on Saturday 11 March 2017 and reach the Western Australian Electoral Commission no later than 9am Thursday 16 March 2017. Please place appropriate postage on the return envelope and mark it as airmail.

In-person early voting

Early voting commences on Monday 20 February and concludes on Friday 10 March. The standard opening hours of the Australian Consulate in Vancouver apply during this period, with the exception of Friday 10 March, when they will remain open until 6pm local time.

Voting while overseas

Please visit the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) website for complete information on enrolment procedures and voting in federal elections while overseas.  You may also contact the AEC by e-mail ( or by telephone (+61 2 6160 2600).  Overseas residents may subscribe to the AEC mailing list in order to receive notifications of future federal elections and referendums.

Registering as an overseas voter

If you are already enrolled to vote and are living overseas, you may register as a postal voter.  As a registered postal voter, you will receive a postal vote in the mail after the announcement of a federal election. 

If you are unable to vote

You may complete and submit an overseas notification form if you are unable to vote in an election while overseas.  The form may be completed at any time and provides you with an option to be removed from the electoral roll while you are overseas.
