Elections and Overseas Voting

2022 Australian Federal Election

A federal election will be held in Australia on Saturday 21 May 2022.

Note: Voting in a federal election is not compulsory for Australians overseas. If you will be overseas at the time of the election and unable to vote, you should complete and submit an overseas notification form. For further information, visit the Australian Electoral Commission’s (AEC) Overseas voting page.

ENROLMENT

To vote, you must be enrolled. It is now too late to enrol or update your details for the 2022 federal election-however, you can still enrol or update your details for future federal, state and local government elections.

For information regarding enrolment and/or eligibility to vote, visit the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) website https://aec.gov.au/overseas/voting.htm or contact the AEC by phone on +61 2 6160 2600 (note: international call charges apply).

IN-PERSON VOTING IN CANADA

In-person voting services ARE NOT available from the High Commission in Ottawa or the Consulates in Vancouver and Toronto.

POSTAL VOTING

The AEC recommends that all overseas voters cast a postal vote in this election. Lodging a postal vote does not require you to attend an overseas voting location.

If you are enrolled to vote and will be living or travelling overseas at the time of the election, you should apply for a postal vote online as soon as possible to ensure that you leave enough time to receive and complete your postal vote by polling day. Applications close at 6pm 18 May 2022 (AEST).

Your postal vote will be processed in Australia and mailed directly to your overseas address. The AEC will start sending ballot papers to voters who have applied for a postal vote after candidate nominations are declared and ballot papers are printed (usually 2-3 weeks after the announcement of the election). Your postal voting pack will include all of the information you need to complete and return your ballot papers.

Australians in Canada can mail their completed postal vote to the AEC directly (per instructions provided in their postal voting pack). Australians in Canada will also be able to drop off postal votes or mail postal votes to the High Commission in Ottawa or our Consulates in Vancouver and Toronto (see below for operational times and mailing address details).

*Reminder: Postal votes should be completed and returned as quickly as possible to ensure that they are received by the AEC in time to be counted.
